BDS Planning & Urban Design managed the effort to gain National Heritage Area designation for the area adjacent to the Willamette River in and around Oregon City and West Linn, Oregon. The Willamette Falls Heritage Area Coalition brought together city, county, state, and tribal governments with several nonprofit heritage, cultural, and arts groups, as well as private industry, to celebrate the ongoing stories of the Willamette Falls. Key issues included quality of life, sense and pride of place, access to the Falls, heritage tourism, economic development, and outdoor recreation, as well as historic and environmental conservation.
Extensive public involvement throughout the process invited the community to develop the themes and projects for the proposed National Heritage Area. (Photo: David Lewis.)
